How to sum up two weeks of sailing in the Greek islands? In a word: Ahhhhhh…Lazy, idyllic days filled with sunshine, gorgeous waters, beckoning whitewashed islands, delicious food, and relaxed, humorous friends. For this sailing trip, we were accompanied by friends including Dave and Hillary Smith, Larry Katz, and Lizzie Weinreb. Our days quickly took on a rhythm all their own: once we wrapped up a lengthy breakfast, we set out for the day’s sail to the next island. The sails ranged between two and seven hours, and the seas served up everything from smooth, glassy sails to ten-foot swells. With Larry Katz’s consistent selections of Bare Naked Ladies and Carlos Santana in the background, we whiled away the mornings chatting, giggling, teasing, debating and reading. Meals provided the only punctuation to divide the day. While our amazing cook, Nikos, set out the noon lunch -- always a gigantic Greek salad crowned by bricks of feta, accompanying a Greek specialty (pasticcio, seafood pasta, moussaka ranked among our favorites) and fresh fruit – we played Scrabble, snorkled, splashed and the guys perfected their arching dives from the deck of the boat, risking life and limb to avoid the tangle of lines and wire cables… Post-lunch was more of the same, except Pringles of all varieties littered the deck. We’re proud that there was no actualized seasickness despite almost constant, goading references to ‘hot mayonnaise.’ Other humbling experiences include: · Despite nine Ivy League degrees between the six of us, we didn’t manage to name all the US Presidents; · Coming up one US state and capital shy; · Warren’s dethroning as “Chess King;” · The public loss of various swimming suit elements; Click here for a picture and description of our boat. |
